About this series
This collection spans the North of England, from the maritime cities to the rural hinterland, the Pennines and the Lake District. It covers newspapers published in the counties of Cumberland, Durham, Lancashire, Northumberland, Westmorland, and Yorkshire during the second half of the twentieth century and the advent of the twenty-first century. This is the third instalment of a three-part series digitised in partnership with the British Library and leading publishers.
These newspapers capture the social, political, and cultural evolution of the North of England from the Second World War to the advent of the digital age. They chart the region’s experience of post-war reconstruction, the rise and decline of traditional industries, the impact of Thatcherism and labour unrest, and the emergence of a new regional identity. From Cold War politics and the miners’ strikes to football, Northern Soul, and the music revolutions of The Beatles and beyond, these papers offer a window into English and British history, but also to the world-wide conflicts and transformations of the period.
Among the titles in this collection are notable publications such as:
- Manchester Evening News, immensely popular evening regional newspaper, with a circulation of some 460,000 copies in the 1960s.
- Hull Daily Mail, popular regional newspaper serving the historic maritime city of Hull and the East Yorkshire region.
- Liverpool Echo, the city of Liverpool’s Labour-leaning daily newspaper, this title reported on the rise of The Beatles and is known for its reporting on Liverpool F.C. and Everton F.C.
- Newcastle Journal, established as a Conservative organ in 1832, this daily paper has a middle-class and professional readership in England’s North-East.
This collection offers invaluable primary sources for academics, students, and researchers of contemporary British history, Cold War politics, cultural studies, media and communication, post-industrial society, economic history, popular music, sport history, and more.
