Sharing newspaper content

Linking to full newspapers and newspaper clippings

There are currently two ways of sharing newspaper content in The Social History Archive with others.

Linking via URL

You can link directly to newspaper content within The Social History Archive. When viewing a newspaper, select "Citation", then "Copy Link" to add the link to your clipboard. Note that the page number you are viewing is included in the URL.

Clipping Tool

You can also share a selected portion of a page using the Clipping tool. When viewing a newspaper, select "Clip and save". You then have the option to clip a portion of the page using the drag-and-select interface, or to clip the full page. Once you have made your selection, select "Share" from the sidebar. You can then share via social media or email, or copy the link to your clipboard.

I want to share my findings with someone outside of my institution

Newspaper clippings can be shared with anyone, whether they have institutional access or not. This is because clippings are generally only a small part of the newspaper itself.

Institutional access is required to view newspaper content shared via the Citation URL.

Troubleshooting

If you authenticate via EZProxy, copy a link to newspaper content, and share that link with a user who has authenticated by means other than EZProxy, the user who has not authenticated via EZProxy may not be able to access the content. This is because EZProxy rewrites URLs to connect users to content.

In these circumstances, we recommend sharing the path for the resource (for example, /image-viewer?issue=BL%2F0003957%2F19910523&page=1). The user can then append this to the end of thesocialhistoryarchive.com domain and they will be prompted to log in as normal.
